The high ceilings, large windows and doors of this center-hall Colonial house allow sunlight to flood the rooms. The building, inspired by the Owners’ 200-year old, Kentucky family home, wraps two sides of a pool area, creating a private backyard.
The design challenge was to create an intimate home for a busy family with three children, while at the same time creating grand spaces for entertaining. Scale and proportion were central design considerations.
Details were carefully considered to ensure that the scale of each component is in accord with the scale of the house - from the gently turning staircase to the ornate door casings. A mahogany library is tucked away to create a quiet reprieve from the bustle of family life.
An existing low-profile 1970s house had to be demolished to make way for the new building. Wetlands dictated that the new building be sited where the original building had stood. The established plantings around the pool were maintained. A new Poolhouse with kitchenette and changing facilities was added to the pool area.
